The Mermaid's Garden began at a creek in Mill Valley, where I grew up — my first wild and sacred place. I'd crouch at the water's edge for hours watching skaters glide across the surface, then crawl into a hidden grove of oaks where the light fell through the canopy and landed on the water in shifting, dappled patterns. I called it Diamonds Weeping.
This painting is that world: the mossy depths, the shimmering light, the underwater garden I always imagined myself small enough to explore. It's the world beneath the surface that has always felt more like home than anywhere above it.
