I swam before I walked. As a child I felt more at home underwater than anywhere on land, and I never grew out of it. Years later, living on the Smith River, the cleanest wild river in America, I would dive into a deep underwater canyon and glide through it like a fish, slipping into a whole other world just by choosing to enter it.
Breathing Under Water is my memory of those moments, when a hidden world reveals itself and we are free to explore it with joy.
